period 6
synthesisImmigration in Period 6 was very similar to immigration during Period 9. Like the Chinese, many latino immigrants, today, have immigrated into the United States in search of jobs, better lives for their families, and also because of the exposure to the idea of an American Dream that anyone in the U.S. should have an equal opportunity at achieving prosperity and a better life through hard work. The Chinese came because they wanted to benefit from the Gold Rush and industrialization, and there was a high demand for skilled workers. Immigrants from latin countries have come because there still has been a high demand for skilled workers. The Immigration act of 1990 increased the number of immigrants allowed in the U.S. per year and it also preferred workers who were skilled. The Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 took effect because local Americans did not like how the Chinese were taking the jobs because they were harder workers and accepted a lower wage than what Americans accepted for their work. Today, the United States is known for its acceptance of anyone from any country or any ethnicity that has created a diverse nation. Without major geographical discoveries such as gold in California or land that was in the west that could be travelled upon by railroad, there would not have been people from other countries wanting to come to the United States. |
