Historical Context- During this time period the new settlers had never experienced or known any type of people like the Native Americans. They were not used to their customs because they were not raised in an environment where Native American culture was common therefore they viewed them as “savage” or “wild people” even though the Native Americans had their own way of life that was very complex but misunderstood by the settlers. The settlers decided to settle in the same areas as the Natives were located, with very little geography divisions the settlers quite often came across the Native Americans because they lived very close by and made up the majority of the population at the time. Many religious people came to America in search of religious freedom, the Native American cultural was very different from the Europeans therefore the Europeans thought it was rubbish and satanic. The environment where the Native Americans lived allowed them to roam freely and express themselves unlike the towns and social standards that Europeans are forced upon to live by. Intended Audience - This was intended for Reverend Andrianus who would most likely spread what he was recently informed to the people who live in England so they can get a sense of what the Native Americans are like even though there is a geographic barrier between the two countries. Point of View - This was in the point of view of Jonas Michaelius a pastor of the Dutch Reformed Church. Many other religious people also shared the same viewpoints as this pastor because they also viewed the Natives cultural the same way. Purpose - The purpose of this letter was to inform the Reverend about the cultural of the Native Americans, and how it is much different from than their cultural. The only reasons why it is different is because nobody has set standards that the Native have to follow like they did on the Europeans therefore the Natives live the way they do. |
