“Global warming may well lead to new Dust Bowls, and sea level rise may eventually swamp entire countries. But for some northern nations such as Norway, the opening of the Arctic frontier due to global warming means that there is a lot of money to be made. And those economic activities, based in large measure on the burning of fossil fuels, will only make global warming worse. And therein lies the paradox”

Explanation and significance:
In the Arctic Circle, which is the circle of ice on the top of the globe, there is hidden oil that is frozen under all of the ice. If global warming continues, then the ice will melt the oil into usable oil where lots of money for Norway could be made off of selling this oil to countries around the world, especially to the United States who uses fossil fuels for energy. There are about 90 billion barrels of oil awaiting to be unfrozen by global warming. This is a paradox because Global warming is caused by the burning of fossil fuels, and in order to get more oils to use for energy, we have to unfreeze it by using the same horrible environmental activities to unfreeze the oil. Global warming is horrible since it could create new Dust Bowls, raise the sea level, and could destroy ecosystems that rely on cold weather. The writer, Tom Yulsman, of this interpretive article on Global Warming says that he does not want humans to blame ourselves for what is happening because we should not be “taking advantage of those opportunities” (Tom Yulsman). The fast warming of the arctic near Norway has positively influenced the economy in Norway because they are selling items that are in high demand, such as energy and minerals that have melted off of the icebergs and glaciers.
