H (Historical Context)- The political cartoon portrays the U.S. on one side and China on the other blowing smoke (representing greenhouse gases) in “Mother Earth’s” face. This relationship demonstrates the effect that greenhouse gases can have on the environment. The excerpt at the bottom states “Did you guys (cough! cough!) Not see the no smoking sign or do you (hack!) just not care?” the “no smoking sign” signifies the regulations that the world has put on emissions such as the Kyoto Protocol and OPECs regulations concerning air pollution. Even with those standards, America and China still continuously emit greenhouse gases without any consequences. We have seen the effect these pollutants have on the environment, but selfishly have put our needs first.
I (Intended Audience)- The intended audience for this political cartoon are people in the U.S. and China — these countries emit the most greenhouse gases. People in any country of the world could also see these and think about what their country is doing to help with greenhouse gas emissions.
P (Purpose)- The purpose of this political cartoon is to make people think about what these big countries are doing to our earth (Mother Nature). It is trying to guilt them into feeling sorry for Mother Nature. The caricatures of China and the U.S. portray those countries as uncaring Fat Cats.
P (Point of View)- The point of view of this political cartoon is definitely on the side of pro-nature and pro-earth, and also anti-industrial. He makes China and the US into bullies who don’t care about Mother Nature. If he was pro-industrial, he would have made those characters sympathetic.
