The first English settlers arrived in 1607, it was chartered by England’s King James I. A joint stock company was the founder of the first permanent English Colony in America and it was named James Town. James Town was located in a swampy area along the James River causing an outbreak of dysentery and malaria. Many of the men who embarked on the journey were not used to physical labor therefore they refused to hunt or farm which led them to go hungry. They traded with the Native Americans who lived nearby but conflicts quickly arose between them and it led to the end of trading causing the settlers to continue going hungry. With captain John Smith’s leadership Jamestown barely survived its first five years. The new land was difficult to manage because none of the men had previous experience with hunting for farming making life in the newly discovered land very difficult. John Rolfe married Native American Pocahontas, with their help the colony was able to develop a new variety of tobacco. They grew lots of tobacco in their new land. But it caused the soil to go bad and it made farming any other products very difficult. Their efforts to be self sufficient and independent was not enough, by 1624 their colony nearly collapsed. The population went from 6,000 to 2,000 because of the new disease the settlers were catching from the mosquitoes that populate the swampy region. This all lead to the bankruptcy of the colony and into the control of King James I and it became England’s first royal colony. Around this time a new colony was created by the radical dissenters of the Church of England. The Separatists best known as the Pilgrims were seeking religious freedom. After 65 days in their voyage on the Mayflower , the boat landed off the coast of Massachusetts and they named their colony Plymouth.Their first winter was very harsh, they were not prepared for it nor were they used to the harish cold weather. Friendly Native Americans helped the people and they good harvest as “thanksgiving” in 1621. Fish, furs and lumber were all easily accessible in their location therefore it became the mainstays of their economy. Another Colony was being established, another group of religious people were also seeking refugee so they can practice their religion. The puritans established the Massachusetts bay colony. John Winthrop and a thousand other puritans sailed from the Massachusetts shore and found Boston. Due to civil war in New England in the 1630’s it caused 15,000 to move to Massachusetts bay Colony, this movement was given the name “the great migration” the new land brought hope to the people. Because the colonies were far away from their home country and not under constant control of the King they began taking steps towards self rule. In 1619 James town’s founders organized the first representative assembly in America, The House of Burgesses. Land owners saw great opportunities in Maryland and Virginia, their rich soil made landowners to find several ways to find cheap workers. This brought indentured servants, the head right system and slavery into America. The over production of tobacco in the 1660’s brought hard times to the Chesapeake colonies. The House of Burgesses attempt to raise prices lead London to retaliate and raise their own prices on goods going to Virginia. Rhode Island and Connecticut were both developed because the banished people from the Puritan religion needed to create a place to live in peace.New Hampshire was the last colony created by New England in 1679. King Philip's war ended most American Native resistance in New England. South Carolina was created in 1607, its economy was based on trading furs and providing food for the West Indies. South Carolina’s rich soil and good climate helped establish large rice plantations tended by enslaved Africans. In North Carolina New England and Virginia established a small and self sufficient tobacco farms. North Carolina had less harbors and poor transportation compared to South Carolina therefore there were only few large plantations and much less slavery. The New England Colonies had rocky soil and long winters, farming was limited. Most farms were small and most labor was done by family members. The Puritans profited from logging and shipbuilding, fishing and trading because they loved near the shores of water and had needs for ships and an abundant amount of logs. The middle colonies had rich soil which allowed them to grow much wheat and corn to be able to Export to Europe and West Indies. There were very huge farms and were often tended by indentured servants. Southern Colonies had a very diverse geography and climate therefore the agriculture varied. Most small family farms had no slaves but the huge plantations required a lot of slaves to keep it going.
